Love Story author dies.

January 20, 2010

Erich Segal, writer of Love Story, which we have a small connection to (not the tragic story, thank goodness…) has died at 72 of a heart attack after suffering through Parkinson’s for over twenty years.

Dustin and I used their wedding vow poems in our own wedding three years ago. Everyone in the crowd noticed immediately (well, those that were around in the 70’s or classic film buffs) and the sighs were audible. The words are simple, yet precious:

Jennifer (Ali McGraw– the one with the fabulous style and hair):
When our two souls stand up erect and strong, face to face, silent, drawing nigh and nigher ’til the lengthening wings break into fire at either curved point; What bitter wrong can the Earth do to us that we should not long be here contented?
Think. In mounting higher, the angels would press on us, and aspire to drop some golden orb of perfect song into our deep dear silence. Let us stay rather on Earth, Beloved, where the unfit contrarious moods of men recoil away and isolate pure spirits and permit a place to stand and love in for a day with darkness and death hour rounding it.

Oliver (Ryan O’Neil- yes, Farrah’s man):
I give you my hand.
I give you my love, more precious than money.
I give you myself before preaching or law.

Will you give me yourself?
Will you come travel with me?
Shall we stick by each other as long as we live?

Needless to say, those who didn’t know the story thought Dustin may have short-changed me a bit in the “depth” category– I am not too worried about it.

I think over the last three years we have both noticed that love means ALWAYS having to say you’re sorry. Repeatedly. Over and over. And mean it.
